E-AIMS Project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility through full-scale demonstration experiences (pilot plant) of an innovative sorting and management methodology off Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The proposed solution is an innovative sorting and management methodology of wastes of all the categories of WEEE, supported by automation systems, software applications, and RFID identification systems. The proposed solution will allow to perform automatic sorting and individualized management of the waste appliances according to a set of data integrated through RFID identifiers into the own appliance (data on producers, hazardous substances, component materials, and instructions for disassembly of the equipment) and the criteria previously established by WEEE managing agents. The main benefits derived from the application of these methodologies and technologies will be the fulfillment of EU Directive 2002/96/EC, which sets ambitious objectives for the collection, recycling, reuse and recovery.
- To increase the rates of material recycling by 35-40% and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill by 25-30%.
- To increase the competitiveness of the WEEE managers in the European and Global market leading to noticeable reductions in managing costs through the reduction in Sorting, registering, transportation and buffer storage costs, Disassembly costs based on disassembly times for standard operations, Integral costs for shredding and separation etc.
- To help all the stakeholders involved in the life cycle of WEEE to face the increasingly restrictive environmental regulations affecting the sector, such as the Directives 2002/95/EC, 2002/96/EC (and subsequent amendments) of the European Parliament
- The main target groups for the immediate commercialisation of the project technologies are Authorized Waste Managers which main role at the end of the product life cycle is the selective collection, treatment and recovery of WEEEs.
