Buildings account for the largest share of energy use (around 40%) worldwide. In order to reach the agreed climate protection targets, insufficiently insulated and pollutive industrial and commercial buildings need to be replaced by more resource and energy efficient buildings.
Appropriate technologies are already widely applied in the residential sector, but are rarely found in industrial- and commercial buildings. The aim of the project is to launch a solution for commercial buildings in the European market which allows to save about 90% of the energy for heating and 90% of the consumption of resources for the envelop compared to conventional commercial buildings - while still being economically priced.
This is made possible by the eco²building construction system, which was jointly developed and demonstrated by architects, timber construction engineers, building services and software engineers within the EC funded research project IP-SME "HOLIWOOD" (FP6, contract no. 011799-2). It is the first complete construction system developed for commercial and industrial buildings based on prefabricated timber frame modules, reaching 'passive house quality'.

PROJECT GOALS:

The project brings together architects, timber construction engineers, building services and software engineers who have collectively developed eco²building, a system which reaches high resource efficiency standards while still being economically priced.
Based on prefabricated timber frame modules, the buildings meet ?'passive house' quality? and uses renewable, CO2 neutral materials. The project sets out to initiate the erection of 12 eco²buildings at an average size of 2.000m² during the project duration, penetrating the Austrian market first and then other European markets through a franchise system.
In this way considerable reductions of CO2-emissions will be achieved: a single eco²building saves approx. 232 tons CO2-eq./year.

During the three year eco-innovation project the consortium launches this environmentally friendly eco²building system on the European market in order to substitute high resource consuming conventional steel sandwich profiles in commercial buildings. Following achievements are ready to be exploit - for instance:

Building parts catalogue: predefined, parameterize able, tested and certified modules and components

CE-marking: European Technical Approval (ETA) according to ETAG 007 of the eco²building system

Sustainability certifications: LCA report, LCC report, ÖGNB certificate of the eco²building system

Trademark: Branding of the unique formula eco²building system (ecological x economical = eco²building)

business model: total contractor system, standardized integral planning and erection procedures, licensing contracts, business plan
